Chapter 1

GETTING STARTED

1. Business Name

A very important factor in creating a successful carpet cleaning business in the name and branding. I have spent days and weeks thinking of names for my businesses. Our current name is Superior Cleaning. We chose this name because it sounds good and we could create a good brand and logo around it. The only downside was the amount of people using that name. There is about 15 superior cleaning’s in our area, which I didn’t know before I got the name. I would recommend going down to the county recorders office and checking on names in your area when your getting your business license.

Make sure you choose a unique name for your carpet cleaning business. You will have this name for a long time. Also check to see if a website is available for your company name. If you are looking into “Bob’s carpet cleaning”, see if www.bobscarpetcleaning.com is available. You can use .net or .org, it doesn’t really matter.

2. Licensing

The only license you will need to get started would be a city Business License.

There are other types of certifications that you can get to post on your website and tell potential client’s, but it is not necessary.
Getting Incorporated would be a good idea of liability purposes once you reach a good size ( maybe 2 or 3 vans ). This will help protect you from some liability and also give you special tax benefits. I am not a tax expert, but I have an S – Corp.

3. Determine your market

It is important to figure out what type of market your going to be in for Carpet Cleaning.

A. What is the average income for your market? 60,000? 80,000? 30,000? It will make a huge difference on how much you are going to charge and what type of service your provide. If your target markets make good income, you typically can charge more for your services.

B. Residential or Commercial? Are you going to focus on Residential Cleaning, Commercial Cleaning, or Both? It is a good idea to focus on one primary market, like Residential, when you first get started. This will help you build a big business in one market and become an expert in that market. You can later move to Commercial or Vice Versa, once you dominate your market. Residential is where I would recommend starting because it is easier to get in there and you can typically make more money for the time you spend. It is also much easier to get the jobs. I will cover residential marketing in another section.

4. Pricing

I am going to cover what we currently charge. Your pricing will vary depending on the market your covering. We are in an area where the average income is about $60,000 per year.

Carpet Cleaning – We charge an average of $30.00 per room
-$55.00 minimum.
-Hallways Free
-Bathrooms Free

1 Bedroom – $55
2 Bedroom – $79
3 Bedroom – $89
4 Bedroom – $119
5 Bedroom – $149
6 Bedroom – $179
7 Bedroom – $209 to $225

Area Rugs – $25 – $45 dollars depending on the size

Our pricing is pretty standard. Our goal is to do the estimate in person 100% of the time. We realistically only do it about 75%, but we always try to see the job in person. Not only does it help us estimate it correctly, but we are able to close on a date for the Job.

**Advertising**

Ok, now for the most important part of owning any business. I have spent years perfecting my advertising methods. I will share as much as I can with you. Most of the people reading this article will be in different states so I don’t mind sharing the secrets.

A) Carpet Cleaning Marketing – Online
Online marketing is where you should start with your business. It is important to get a webpage set up with your name. You can visit ServiceBusinessWebsites.com . They created my carpet cleaning site and I get about 4 leads per day, just from the internet. They have a few different templates to choose from that are optimized already for Google. I highly recommend them.
Once your site is set up, it is important to start branding your company name all over the internet. I have the very best sites listed below. Make sure you create your FREE profile’s on each of these sites, as it will help your ranking of your webpage and will get your name out across the internet.

Sites to list your company on for FREE:

1. www.MerchantCircle.com

2. www.BrownBook.net

3. www.JudysBook.com

4. www.YP.com

I have included about 20 more FREE websites that you can list your business profile. This will increase the traffic to your website. People use these sites to find carpet cleaning companies, so you need to be on as many of them as you can!

Carpet Cleaning Directories. With carpet cleaning directories, you have to usually pay a small fee. If you can find some local directories this will help out. I will list some national ones that work well.

Google Local:

Google local is a very important part of any carpet cleaners online business. You can create a free Google Local profile at places.google.com/business . Once you create your FREE profile with Google Local, make sure that you optimize it with your keywords. eg: carpet cleaning hemet, tile cleaning hemet, window cleaning, upholstery cleaning, etc etc. This google profile will get you listed above many of your competitors if you do it right.

I will give you my exact Google Local link and you can pretty much copy the information from it. I am ranked #1 for many of my keywords on Google. This is in my Complete Carpet Cleaning Guide

B) PRINT MARKETING

Flyers can be your best friend. The first thing I did when I started my company years ago was create some flyers and go business to business and to residential areas. You will immediately get business if you do this. Don’t be scared to get out there and generate business. Yes online marketing is better, but you won’t see immediate results. The easiest way to get busy is going Door to Door in residential neighborhoods.

Here is a script I use:
*Knock on door*
“Hello, may I give you one of these?” *Stand back*, while they grab the flyer from your hand and start to slowly read it…
“I’m from Bob’s Carpet Cleaning. We do Carpet Cleaning, Windows, and Upholstery. We also give free estimates”
*Let them respond*
Most of the time they will say ” Thank You” and then close the door. 1 out of 15 times they will say ” how much would you charge for __________”
Whenever we are not busy, we have our guys doing this daily. I have included other scripts and the exact flyers we use in our Guide.
